Netflix has announced that it is teaming up again with Guillermo del Toro for a stop-motion animation based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel The Buried Giant.
Guillermo del Toro will return to direct and write the script for the stop-motion animation, having previously announced The Buried Giant last month, but at the time it was unclear whether he would be working with Netflix again or He will go to another studio. Matilda the Musical writer Dennis Kelly will help del Toro write the screenplay for The Buried Giant.
In the first 28 days of its broadcast, Pinocchio was watched more than 50 million times by Netflix viewers and has been one of the most successful works of this network to date. The Pinocchio animation recently won the BAFTA Award for Best Animation of the Year. Del Toro said in a statement:
“My collaboration with Netflix in animation and stop-motion production as a medium for telling complex stories in limitless worlds will continue with Buried Giant Animation. It is an honor for me to be directing and writing the screenplay with Dennis Kelly for this adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, and this is a huge responsibility.”
The novel The Buried Giant follows the story of an elderly couple named Axel and Beatrice who go on an adventure to find their missing son. The narrative takes place with the couple’s journey in ancient Britain. When the Saxons and Braytons live in a fragile peace after a devastating war.
