US authorities are taking further steps to regulate artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT. In this regard, the National Communications and Information Administration (NTIA) has requested public comments in its latest action on possible regulations that artificial intelligence creators will have to follow. NTIA says these actions will help the Biden administration ensure that AI models operate without harming national security.
According to Engadget, the National Communications and Information Administration has asked users for opinions on areas such as the reliability of artificial intelligence triggers, safety testing methods, as well as the extent of access to data needed to evaluate systems. The agency also considers different strategies for specific areas, such as health care, if needed.
Users can register their opinions in this field until June 10. NTIA considers the establishment of such rules to be critical. The organization’s watchdog says there are currently too many risks in which artificial intelligence can cause harm. Laws can not only prevent the recurrence of these incidents, but also minimize the risk of occurrence.
ChatGPT and other similar generative AI models have so far been plagued by issues including sensitive data leaks and copyright violations, raising concerns about disinformation and malware campaigns. In this regard, a group of technology activists, artificial intelligence experts and enthusiasts, including Twitter CEO Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, requested in an open letter that for at least the next 6 months, the development of more powerful models than GPT- Stop 4. Additionally, the use of ChatGPT was banned in Italy due to user privacy concerns, and Germany is apparently following suit.
