What do we see in today’s NASA image?
Today’s image focuses on the giant spiral galaxy UGC 2885, which is 232 million light-years away. Its area of about 800,000 light-years is very large compared to the diameter of 100,000 light-years of the Milky Way and it has about one trillion stars. This number is almost ten times the number of stars in the Milky Way.
The galaxy UGC 2885 was part of renowned astronomer Vera Rubin’s groundbreaking research into understanding how galaxies can become such massive objects and the rotation of spiral galaxies. His work was the first step to convincingly demonstrate the dominant presence of dark matter in our universe.
